We are committed to offering compassionate, expert care 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ensuring that our furry fris receive the best possible medical attention whenever they need it.
A Legacy of Caring for Over a Century
Established in 1906 by Ellin Prince Speyer as part of the Women's Auxiliary to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ASPCA, this pioneering organization was founded with the belief that certn branches of e work were particularly suited for women. Their efforts to supplement and enhance the activities of their male-dominated counterparts began with initiatives like the Work Horse Parade, held on Memorial Day in 1907, which med to promote better treatment of horses by encouraging streetcar drivers, peddlers, and other horse owners.
Building on these early successes, the Women's Auxiliary set out to create a dispensary and outpatient clinic for animals whose owners couldn't afford medical care. This clinic opened its doors in 1910 at the heart of New York City's largest immigrant community, providing essential services with volunteer veterinarians and donated resources from Auxiliary members and fris. In that first full year, they treated over 6,028 animals.
Continual Advancement
Through decades of innovation and dedication, the Women's Auxiliary evolved into a beacon of animal healthcare excellence. Today, as the Stephen Christine Schwarzman Animal Medical Center, we carry on this legacy by fostering groundbreaking clinical research that advances veterinary knowledge, trning future leaders in veterinary medicine through our educational programs, and providing comprehensive care to pets across all walks of life.
